The number of flood victims in Sabah surged to 409 individuals from 110 families by Friday morning, a sharp increase from 154 people across 54 families reported the previous night, according to the State Disaster Management Committee.
In a statement, the committee detailed that 255 people were evacuated from Penampang, while 154 others fled their homes in Beaufort. The floods have impacted 22 villages, with 14 in Penampang and eight in Beaufort bearing the brunt of the deluge.
Meanwhile, the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department reported ongoing search and rescue efforts for a 97-year-old man believed to be buried in a landslide in Kampung Sarapung, Penampang, which occurred on Thursday night. The operation faced significant challenges, as floodwaters and landslide debris blocked access routes, forcing the team to trek 3 kilometers on foot to reach the site.
The search is being conducted in collaboration with the police, other agencies, and local villagers, who are assisting in the effort to locate the missing individual.
