Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to resolving the Taiwan issue and achieving national reunification, while vowing to take firm action against supporters of Taiwan independence during a ceremony marking the 105th anniversary of the Communist Party of China (CPC).
Addressing the event at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Xi described reunification as the CPC’s ‘historic mission’ and an ‘unshakeable commitment’.
Xi reiterates reunification pledge
Xi said resolving the Taiwan issue and achieving China’s complete reunification remained a core objective of the party.
He pledged to take ‘resolute actions’ against supporters of ‘Taiwan independence’, oppose external interference and continue advancing the reunification process.
Xi also reaffirmed support for the ‘One China’ principle and the 1992 Consensus, while calling for closer ties with a broad range of people in Taiwan.
China regards Taiwan as part of its territory, while Taiwan maintains that it is sovereign and self-governed.
Focus on sovereignty and party leadership
Xi also stressed the importance of safeguarding China’s sovereignty, security and development interests.
He called for upholding the Communist Party’s absolute leadership over the armed forces and said maintaining long-term prosperity and stability in Hong Kong and Macao remained important to China’s national rejuvenation.
In addition, Xi pledged to continue the country’s anti-corruption campaign, calling for comprehensive and targeted efforts to strengthen party governance and political discipline.
North Korea reaffirms ties with China
Separately, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un congratulated the CPC on its anniversary and reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with China.
According to the Korean Central News Agency, Kim said he was prepared to work with Xi to further deepen the friendly and cooperative relationship between the two countries.
Kim also referred to his recent meeting with Xi in Pyongyang, describing it as a historic occasion that strengthened friendship and mutual trust between the two neighbours.
