Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH), led by state PKR chief Mustapha Sakmud, has emphasized a cooperative stance in its partnership with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) for the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election (PRN-17). Mustapha, the Sepanggar MP, clarified that PH, comprising only four component parties, is not seeking a large share of seats, prioritizing political stability at both state and federal levels over aggressive demands.
“What matters most is ensuring political stability for our state and country,” Mustapha told Borneo Post, addressing concerns sparked by the recent departure of Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) and Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) from the GRS coalition.
Responding to Coalition Shifts
The exit of STAR and SAPP from GRS on Wednesday night stemmed from disagreements over the coalition’s alliance with PH for the state polls. Despite this fracture, Mustapha expressed confidence in the unity of the remaining GRS component parties and affirmed PH’s readiness to adapt to any outcome. “We are prepared for any scenario and hope the coalition remains united,” he said.
Ongoing Seat Negotiations
Mustapha revealed that discussions on seat allocations between PH and GRS are still underway, with an agreement expected before the state assembly’s dissolution. He confirmed that PKR intends to defend its current seats, including Api-Api, held by Christina Liew, and Inanam, held by Peto Galim. “Candidate evaluations are ongoing, and the PKR president will announce selections at the appropriate time,” he added.
Disputes Over Seat Claims
Tensions within the coalition surfaced when STAR information chief Anuar Ghani claimed GRS had offered PH 23 of the 73 available seats, a figure he deemed excessive and misaligned with Sabahan sentiments. GRS secretary-general Masidi Manjun, however, dismissed the claim, clarifying to FMT that seat negotiations remain unresolved.
Masidi, a state minister, stated that GRS aims to contest 55 seats, leaving 18 for PH. “I believe 23 seats is what PH is trying to request,” he remarked, highlighting ongoing differences in expectations.
