Perikatan Nasional chairman Samsuri Mokhtar has responded firmly to remarks by Muhyiddin Yassin, stating that the Bersatu president is also not the coalition’s prime minister candidate.
Uncertainty over PM candidate
Samsuri, who is also the Terengganu Menteri Besar and popularly known as Dr Sam, pointed out that the identity of Perikatan’s prime minister candidate remains undecided.
He made the statement on his Facebook page on Thursday, March 5.
Samsuri stressed that the current focus must be on building a stronger Perikatan Nasional and fostering greater unity across the country.
This preparation, he said, is essential to ensure the coalition is ready to face the next general election.
Priority on strengthening the coalition
Whoever eventually becomes the candidate, Samsuri underlined that the immediate task is to empower Perikatan and reinforce national cohesion.
He made it clear that Muhyiddin, often referred to as TSMY, no longer holds the position of Perikatan’s prime minister candidate.
The statement came after Muhyiddin had earlier commented that Samsuri’s appointment as Perikatan chairman does not automatically make the Terengganu Menteri Besar the coalition’s choice for prime minister if Perikatan wins the next general election.
Recent leadership change
Samsuri took over as Perikatan Nasional chairman on February 22 this year.
The position became vacant after Muhyiddin resigned from the post on December 30 last year.
