Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has indicated he is not prepared to contest the post of PAS vice-president, despite receiving open backing from the party’s top leadership.
Speaking to Berita Harian, Sanusi said he had no objection to remaining in the party’s second-tier leadership if there were other individuals more suitable and capable of holding the vice-presidential role.
“I believe there are others who are more qualified for the position, so let them have it. I do not mind staying in a lower-ranking role,” he said.
“Give the post to those with the right capabilities, credentials, and the ability to communicate carefully — but we still need some loose cannons, too,” he added.
Party Leadership Support and Nomination Process
PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin recently voiced his support for Sanusi’s nomination, citing the Kedah chief minister’s strong performance in office and his influence within the party.
However, Sanusi clarified that he has yet to receive any official notification of nomination, which is typically issued only after the nomination period concludes.
“This year, I’ll consider whether it is necessary to contest. If there is someone better and more qualified, I will campaign for him. PAS is not like other parties — we do not scramble for positions to the extent of resigning ministerial posts,” he said.
Assessment of Current Vice-Presidents
Sanusi also acknowledged the contributions of the party’s current vice-presidents — Idris Ahmad, Amar Abdullah, and Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar — noting that each brings distinct strengths which members should carefully consider ahead of the upcoming party elections in September.
