Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar has called on all parties to respect the legal process and allow the courts to decide on the corruption charges against state executive councillor Hanafiah Mat.
Respect for due process
Samsuri stressed that the state government fully respects the ongoing legal proceedings and remains committed to upholding integrity.
He reminded everyone that Hanafiah is not presumed guilty until proven guilty and convicted by the court.
In a statement, Samsuri urged all parties to avoid speculation or early judgment that could interfere with the judicial process.
He added that calm and patience are needed to let the law take its course.
No need for resignation
Samsuri said Hanafiah does not have to step down from his position as executive councillor.
He explained that holding the post does not affect the prosecution or the trial proceedings.
The menteri besar appealed to everyone to stay composed and give space for the courts to handle the matter fairly.
Details of the charges
Earlier today, Hanafiah pleaded not guilty at the Kuala Terengganu Sessions Court to two charges of abuse of power.
He is accused of using his position as executive councillor and chairman of Pangkalan Bekalan Kemaman Sdn Bhd to secure appointments for his two children in state government-owned subsidiaries in 2020.
The charges were framed under Section 23(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009.
If convicted, the offences carry a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment and a minimum fine of RM10,000.
