Thailand is witnessing a surge in exotic pet ownership, with nearly 500 lions now registered in cafes, breeding farms, zoos, and private homes.
One TikTok influencer, Tharnuwarht Plengkemratch, is known for keeping a 200-kg hybrid lion-tiger named Big George and another lion behind an auto workshop.
He frequently shares videos showing close interactions with the big cats. “I want to show people, especially those who fear lions, that they can bond with humans,” he said.
Wildlife experts have raised concerns about the trend, warning of risks to human safety and the potential encouragement of illegal wildlife trade.
Sadudee Punpugdee, Director of Wildlife Protection at Thailand’s Department of National Parks, stated: “These animals retain their natural instincts and may become dangerous. They should remain in their natural habitats.”
The phenomenon is partly driven by social media, especially TikTok. Countries like the US and UAE have already banned private ownership of big cats. Thai authorities are now considering revising their wildlife regulations.
