A tsunami warning of up to three meters has been issued along Japan’s Pacific coastline, spanning from Hokkaido to Wakayama, following a powerful earthquake off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula.
According to broadcaster NHK, the Japanese government has ordered evacuations in certain coastal areas.
Although no injuries were reported, regional governors in Russia confirmed the earthquake was the strongest in decades. A town in the Sakhalin region was also evacuated after tsunami alerts.
Officials said waves as high as 4 meters were recorded in some parts of Kamchatka following the quake.
University of Tokyo seismologist Shinichi Sakai stated that even distant shallow earthquakes can generate tsunamis capable of reaching Japan.
Japan, located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, is among the world’s most earthquake-prone nations.
