The upcoming Umno Youth special convention on January 3 is not expected to disrupt the stability of the unity government, according to Supreme Council member Zambry Abdul Kadir.
He emphasised that discussions on Umno’s position in the unity government should not be turned into an ultimatum or viewed in black-and-white terms.
Umno Youth understands the issue cannot be handled emotionally or based on fleeting sentiments, Zambry added when contacted.
Balanced Approach Needed
As Barisan Nasional secretary-general and Higher Education Minister, Zambry expressed confidence that the Youth wing recognises the importance of a thorough evaluation.
This should consider the party’s strategic interests, national stability, the people’s mandate, public sentiment, and Umno’s current role in the unity government.
Any follow-up decisions would be escalated to the Umno Supreme Council, the party’s top decision-making body.
Zambry foresees no immediate instability stemming from the convention.
Background to the Convention
Umno Youth chief Muhamad Akmal Saleh announced yesterday that the wing will convene specially to deliberate the party’s direction and involvement in the unity government.
Titled “Umno’s direction: Stay or leave the unity government,” the event follows DAP MP Yeo Bee Yin’s failure to apologise within the 24-hour deadline set by Selangor Umno Youth, leaving grassroots members disappointed.
