Three teenagers individuals aged 19, 18, and 14 who were detained on Tuesday to assist investigations into a viral video have been released on police bail after their statements were recorded.
According to Seremban OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Hatta Che Din, the trio, though from Johor Baru, committed the act in Seremban. Police are investigating the case under Section 504 of the Penal Code, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988.
In the controversial video, the three youths—believed to be influencers—were seen eating at a fast-food outlet, before packing chicken bones into a rice packet and giving it to a homeless man sleeping on the street. The man appeared surprised but thanked them with a hand gesture.
The video sparked public outrage. In response, the trio issued an apology, claiming the man had been informed and consented to the filming. They also stated he had received a proper meal beforehand.
On Aug 5, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) confirmed the trio had their statements recorded at the Iskandar Puteri police station. The agency also seized three mobile phones and SIM cards.
The MCMC described the video as “extremely offensive” and stated the actions had touched on sensitive issues, warranting further investigation.
