Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has reaffirmed Barisan Nasional’s (BN) commitment to the unity government, responding to a poem written by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim with a verse of his own.
Speaking at a press conference at Bahang Bay Hotel, Zahid said he composed the poem after reading Anwar’s Facebook post the previous day.
‘A roof torn off can still be held in place, but if a storm strikes, it will be carried out to sea,’ he said, reciting the verse he wrote.
The exchange came after Anwar shared a poem that appeared to play down tensions between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and BN during the Negeri Sembilan state election campaign.
In his poem, Anwar stressed that although the two coalitions may take different approaches, they should remain united as long as consensus is maintained.
BN committed to unity government
Zahid said there should be no doubt over BN’s commitment to supporting Anwar’s administration until the end of the current parliamentary term.
Asked whether there were any plans to bring down the government, he rejected the suggestion outright.
‘I have no such intention,’ he said.
Zahid also dismissed speculation over alleged political manoeuvres, saying there was neither a ‘Bangkok Move’ nor a ‘Dubai Move’.
Political stability remains the priority
Zahid said BN would remain part of the unity government until the end of the 15th Parliament, in accordance with the decree of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
He said the coalition had made a firm decision to continue working with its partners in the interest of political stability.
‘Let people say what they want. We have made up our minds to remain together in the unity government for political stability. We need to be sincere about this,’ he said.
