Police recorded a statement from Akmal Saleh last night in connection with an assembly he organised in Kepala Batas, Penang last Thursday.
The Umno Youth chief finished giving his statement at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters (IPD) in Kuala Lumpur at 1:25am today, Bernama reported.
His lawyer, Aizat Aman, said Akmal — the Merlimau assemblyman — cooperated fully with investigators and answered about 80 questions posed by the officer in charge.
“He is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 506 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,” Aizat told reporters outside the IPD.
Dr Akmal later addressed a large group of supporters gathered outside the police station and told the media he would continue to give his full cooperation to the authorities.
He arrived at Dang Wangi IPD at around 11:00pm yesterday to have his statement recorded.
Police have confirmed they are probing a viral Facebook video in which Akmal allegedly made remarks characterised as “hate speech” that could disturb public peace. Penang police chief Azizee Ismail said the probe under the Sedition Act and the Penal Code (for criminal intimidation) was opened after a report was lodged on Aug 12.
“To date, two police reports have been filed by members of the public in Penang, and both reports are currently under investigation,” he said, adding that Bukit Aman’s Special Crime Investigation Unit had taken over the case as of yesterday evening.
