Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed that the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia are expected to meet in Putrajaya today to discuss a ceasefire aimed at resolving the ongoing border conflict.
Anwar said the negotiation is scheduled for 3 pm.
“The representatives from Thailand and Cambodia asked me to help mediate a peace settlement, so we will host the meeting here at 3 pm tomorrow,” he said during the ‘Majlis Ilmu MADANI’ event last night.
He added that he is expected to chair the negotiation, which will involve reviewing conditions submitted by both sides, with the primary goal being an immediate ceasefire.
Anwar explained that the talks came after US President Donald Trump urged both nations to find a solution, while China also contacted both parties to call for an end to the conflict.
A team from Malaysia and possibly neighboring countries will monitor the discussions to ensure they are conducted properly.
“Within our means, we will do our best. Alhamdulillah, we are given that trust and respect. They are our close friends and neighbors, and we work together,” Anwar said.
He stressed the need to align negotiation parameters, adding that the Foreign Minister and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are working through the night to ensure clarity.
“Although the conflict is not as severe as in other parts of the world, we must put a stop to it. I have always taken pride in ASEAN being the most peaceful region and the fastest-growing economy,” he said.
Earlier, the Thai government confirmed it would attend a regional peace consultation in Malaysia on Monday to address the escalating border conflict with Cambodia. Thai government spokesperson Jirayu Huangsap said the talks aim to gather proposals that could lead to informed decisions and ultimately restore peace.
