Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is visiting Sabah, said his presence in the state is not for personal gain but to fulfil the promise of safeguarding the rights and future of its people.
He said that throughout more than a decade of holding various government positions, including the years before becoming prime minister, he had never benefited from Sabah, as his governance principles are rooted in integrity.
“I’ve been a minister for more than 10 years, but I have never taken a single log from Sabah, nor any contract or land… I come to serve the people and carry out my trust,” he said during the PMX Sayang Sabah Mega Talk yesterday night.
Anwar said the Madani government remains committed to ensuring that Sabah’s development receives due attention, including the historic move to return regulatory control of electricity to the state in line with the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
However, he said the state government later informed that it lacked sufficient funds to resolve power supply issues, prompting the federal government to channel an additional RM1.2 billion to address the matter comprehensively.
“This is Sabah’s right and we returned it. But when Sabah said they didn’t have enough money, we immediately helped, because this is a trust,” he said, adding that more than 1,000 solar-powered poles have been installed in Sabah’s interior under the Solar Madani initiative.
He added that the federal government also takes seriously public complaints on basic infrastructure, including roads, noting that he himself experienced potholes during working visits.
