Bersatu will not cooperate with any political party in the Melaka state election, including those in Pakatan Harapan (PH), said Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali.
Azmin said Bersatu would contest under its own logo, as it did in the Negeri Sembilan election.
‘Our focus now is on reviewing election preparations in several target areas,’ he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.
Bersatu prepares to contest on its own
Azmin said Bersatu was also drawing up its strategy and preparing its election machinery to contest the polls independently.
He distanced the party from a meeting involving several senior Bersatu and PH leaders in Melaka, saying the gathering was purely personal and did not reflect Bersatu’s official position.
On Sept 28, several Bersatu leaders reportedly attended a closed-door dinner at a hotel in Melaka, fuelling speculation over possible cooperation ahead of the state election.
Sinar Harian reported that Bersatu information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz, election director Ali Mohamad, associate wing chief R Sri Sanjeevan and Melaka information chief Hishamuddin Karim were among those present.
PH Plus talks continue
Melaka PH chairman Adly Zahari had previously said the state chapter was finalising negotiations with parties that shared similar aspirations, including Bersatu, to form a ‘PH Plus’ alliance for the state election.
However, Amanah communications director Khalid Samad said on Sept 29 that PH would not team up with Barisan Nasional for the state polls.
