Barisan Nasional (BN) aims to contest at least one state seat in every parliamentary constituency in Sabah during the upcoming state election, according to its deputy chairman Mohamad Hasan.
Mohamad, who also serves as Umno’s deputy president, said this proposal reflects the Sabah Umno-BN leadership’s intention to ensure the party retains representation and relevance throughout the state, Berita Harian reported.
“In the last state election, several parliamentary constituencies had no BN candidates at all. This situation dampened the morale of Umno-BN members and grassroots machinery, as they had no role to play during the election.
“When opportunities are withheld, some members may feel disheartened and eventually leave the party — and that is detrimental,” he said.
He made the remarks during a press conference after officiating the joint Umno divisional delegates’ meeting, which included the party’s Wanita, Youth, and Puteri wings, in Membakut today.
Mohamad proposed that BN be allocated at least one state seat in constituencies with two or three state seats.
“This would boost the morale of party members and help them feel included in the electoral process,” he added.
He further noted that the proposal would be deliberated at the highest level through Umno’s negotiation committee and among the secretaries-general of BN’s component parties.
“This is my message to the secretaries-general — do not overlook this request. Every parliamentary constituency must have at least one BN candidate,” Mohamad emphasized.
Also present at the event was Umno Supreme Council member and Kimanis MP Mohamad Alamin.
