Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh has brushed aside criticism tinged with racial undertones regarding her and her deputy’s appointments. She emphasised that leadership should be evaluated based on policies and outcomes, rather than skin colour.
Yeoh highlighted her public service track record since 2008. This includes serving as Subang Jaya assemblyman, Selangor State Assembly Speaker, Segambut member of parliament, and roles as both minister and deputy minister.
Addressing Race in Leadership
“I want to comment on the issue of race that has been repeatedly raised since news of our appointment,” Yeoh said. “Race or skin colour has never defined or limited our work.”
She stressed that her focus has always been on policies, implementation, and results, not personal background. Yeoh added that she is fully committed to serving the people and ready to start work, letting her achievements speak for themselves.
Yeoh made these remarks after clocking in for duty at Menara Seri Wilayah. She was joined by her deputy, Lo Su Fui.
Priorities for Federal Territories
Her key priority is to ensure the Federal Territories are clean in both form and substance. This means maintaining physical upkeep alongside integrity in governance.
Yeoh envisions surroundings and administration that allow people to live, work, and enjoy life comfortably.
The administration will prioritise close cooperation with all Federal Territories MPs. These representatives understand ground realities in their areas.
Both Yeoh and Lo bring administrative experience and legal backgrounds. This will enable them to perform effectively from the start.
Focus on Labuan
Yeoh noted that Lo’s appointment, as someone from Sabah, shows the government’s commitment to giving Labuan greater attention.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had earlier defended the cabinet lineup, including Yeoh’s role. He stated it should not be made into a racial issue.
