Former Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung has joined Bersama after leaving PKR, effective today.
Lee joins several other former PKR MPs and leaders in Bersama, including former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli, former PKR vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and former Subang MP Wong Chen.
Lee, who previously served as PKR treasurer-general and communications director, submitted his membership application to Bersama today before being admitted into the party.
Lee to help lead Melaka election campaign
“His entry strengthens Bersama’s leadership line-up as the party continues to grow. He will share the responsibility of leading our Melaka election campaign, focusing on building our machinery in Chinese-majority areas,” Rafizi, Nik Nazmi and Bersama president Syukri Razab said in a joint statement.
“Alongside us, Lee will be among the Bersama leaders in the interim before a party election is held next year.”
Resignation follows PKR suspension
Lee announced his resignation as Petaling Jaya MP on Friday and said he would leave PKR effective today.
This followed PKR’s decision to suspend him from the party for three years.
Lee was elected Petaling Jaya MP in the 2022 general election. Before that, he served two terms as the Semambu assemblyman in Pahang.
Known as an ally of Rafizi, Lee had been at odds with the PKR leadership since attending Bersama’s launch in May.
He defended his presence at Bersama events, saying he was merely participating in activities organised in his constituency.
