Melaka Bersatu is determined to defend Bemban and Sungai Udang in the state election, despite the two incumbents having since left the party and joined Wawasan.
State chapter information chief Hishamuddin Abdul Karim said Bersatu was also expected to contest up to 10 of the 28 state seats.
Bersatu targets up to 10 seats
“I am confident the party will continue to contest Bemban and Sungai Udang,” he told FMT.
“I am also confident Bersatu will contest no more than 10 seats. Even if there is cooperation with another party, we will contest no more than 10 state seats.”
Hishamuddin said the number of seats and candidates would be finalised after negotiations on cooperation, which could conclude as early as next week.
Incumbents have joined Wawasan
In the 2021 Melaka state election, Bersatu won Bemban through Yadzil Yaakub and Sungai Udang through Aleef Yusof, with both contesting under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) banner.
Yadzil and Aleef later left Bersatu and joined Wawasan.
Wawasan vice-president Rahim Thamby Chik has said the party specifically wants to contest both Bemban and Sungai Udang, regardless of whether PN reaches an agreement with Barisan Nasional.
