Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner Azam Baki described the court’s decision in the 1MDB case as the fulfilment of the agency’s duty to the nation. He said it was not a moment for celebration or personal pride.
In a statement today, Azam emphasised that the verdict reflects MACC’s responsibility carried out under the trust and mandate given to it.
Upholding Rule of Law
MACC’s role is to uphold the rule of law without fear or favour. This is guided only by facts, evidence, and the public interest, he added.
Appreciation for Team Efforts
Azam congratulated the MACC investigating officers and prosecution team involved in the 1MDB probe since July 2015. He recognised their extraordinary commitment and perseverance in gathering evidence both locally and abroad.
The investigation encountered major legal, technical, and jurisdictional challenges. Yet the team stayed firm in meeting the required legal standards for court proceedings.

Azam expressed gratitude to local agencies that assisted, including Bank Negara Malaysia and the Royal Malaysia Police.
He also acknowledged vital support from foreign counterparts. These include the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department, the United Kingdom’s International Anti-Corruption Coordination Centre, Switzerland’s Attorney-General’s Office, Singapore’s Commercial Affairs Department, as well as authorities in the Netherlands and Barbados.
Their professionalism and commitment to cross-border cooperation were deeply appreciated, he said.
