Children aged 16 and below will no longer be allowed to create their own social media accounts starting next year. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced that the Cabinet has made this decision to better protect young users from online dangers.
The government hopes all social media platforms will follow the new rule and block account creation for those under 16.

Fahmi told reporters the policy follows similar age restrictions already in place in Australia and several other countries. Malaysia is now studying the best ways to enforce the ban effectively.

Stronger Verification on the Way
One key measure under consideration is mandatory eKYC verification. Platforms may soon require users to submit official documents such as MyKad, passports, or MyDigital ID to prove their age.
The government expects social media companies to put these checks in place by next year.
Fahmi stressed that keeping children safe online needs teamwork. When government, regulators, platforms, and parents all do their part, Malaysia can enjoy an internet that is fast, affordable, accessible, and above all, safe for families.
