A senior PKR leader has called for the party’s machinery to ramp up efforts to counter disinformation on social media, accusing the opposition of leveraging falsehoods to undermine public trust in the government.
Melaka PKR chief Shamsul Iskandar Akin emphasized the urgency of these efforts as the state prepares for its election, expected by November 2026.
“When we formed the government, we observed the opposition spreading relentless falsehoods on social media,” Shamsul said during PKR’s 27th Reformasi anniversary celebration in Melaka on Saturday. “To counter this, we must work harder, transforming social media into a battlefield by adopting cutting-edge strategies and leveraging technologies like artificial intelligence.”
The event was attended by PKR President Anwar Ibrahim, Secretary-General Fuziah Salleh, and Central Leadership Council member Adam Adli.
Shamsul also commended Anwar’s tireless work ethic at 78 years old, noting his demanding schedule. “He was in Sandakan, Sabah, this morning and chaired a meeting in Melaka this afternoon. On Friday, he was in Putrajaya in the morning before traveling to Kota Kinabalu in the evening. When does he rest or sleep? If he can work so diligently, we must strive harder,” he remarked.
Shamsul stressed that the push for reforms cannot rely solely on party leadership but requires the collective effort of PKR’s machinery. “We must be champions of reform and remain united in this cause,” he urged.
The Melaka state legislative assembly’s term is set to expire in November 2026, with the election to follow within 60 days.
