Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) chief Bung Moktar Radin described his three years in the opposition as a formative experience that offered valuable lessons for the coalition’s future. Speaking at the launch of Inspirasi Wanita Luar Biasa at a local hotel on Saturday, he emphasized the importance of humility and strategic foresight for BN’s revival.
“Personally, my time in the opposition was enlightening. Every setback serves a purpose,” Bung said. “BN’s defeat taught us not to act hastily or arrogantly. It allowed me to assess, observe, and deeply understand Sabah’s political landscape.”
He expressed optimism about revitalizing Umno and BN, not only in Sabah but nationwide, under the leadership of BN President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who attended the event.
Reflecting on the 2020 Sabah state election, Bung recalled that Sabah Umno had formed the state government alongside Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), with him appointed as deputy chief minister and state public works minister. However, in 2022, BN transitioned to the opposition after an unsuccessful attempt to unseat the GRS government.
Looking ahead to the upcoming state election, Bung revealed that BN and Umno have been preparing their election machinery for over three years. “These meticulous preparations now include a strong focus on women’s involvement to avoid internal contradictions,” he stated. “This time, we must field candidates capable of securing victories. Relying solely on quotas, such as the 30 percent allocation for women, won’t suffice. This election demands groundwork over mere negotiations.”
The Lamag assemblyman urged women to play a pivotal role in BN’s campaign efforts once the state assembly is dissolved. “In the past, we worked a few hours; now, we must be ready to work around the clock to ensure victory,” he said, underscoring the need for relentless commitment.
Bung expressed confidence that a triumphant BN could implement transformative programs and predicted that the coalition could double or triple its 14 seats from the 2020 election.
The Sabah state assembly’s term is set to expire on November 11, 2025, unless dissolved earlier, with the election required within 60 days thereafter.
