Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Nor has firmly declined interest in becoming the next Perikatan Nasional chairman after Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation.
The PAS election director instead proposed Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar for the position.
“I don’t agree. There are candidates who are more deserving,” Sanusi said when contacted.
He highlighted Samsuri as a stronger fit for the role.
Key Position Requires Careful Choice
Sanusi described the PN chairman post as crucial, one that would shape a national leader.
“And Samsuri is better than me to fill the position,” he added.
He stressed that selection should consider various factors beyond mere media attention.
Different Roles in Party
Sanusi explained his own role differs from Samsuri’s.
He sees himself as a general on the battlefield, engaging closely with grassroots members.
In contrast, Samsuri acts as a strategist guiding the party’s overall direction.
Recent Endorsement
Yesterday, PAS Ulama Council chief Ahmad Yahaya endorsed Sanusi for the chairmanship.
Ahmad reportedly praised Sanusi as respected by supporters and rivals alike.
He also commended Sanusi’s strong understanding of politics.
Background to Resignation
Muhyiddin, who is Bersatu president, stepped down as PN chairman effective January 1.
The move followed the political crisis in Perlis.
He had led the coalition since August 7, 2020, when PN was officially registered.
