Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil downplayed the impact of a recent opposition rally in Kuala Lumpur attended by about 18,000 people, saying it does not threaten Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s position.
“In Malaysia, street demonstrations do not bring down a Prime Minister. The easiest way is to table a vote of no confidence in Parliament,” Fahmi said during a dialogue at the 2025 Peninsular Malaysia MADANI Community Retreat in Ayer Keroh last night.
“The Prime Minister has welcomed such a motion from the beginning—even before Parliament sat on July 21. But a week has passed and no one has had the courage to do it,” he added.
“Perhaps they lack the numbers, which is why they refuse to try. The second way to remove a Prime Minister is through a general election.”
Fahmi also warned against repeating the 2020 “Sheraton Move,” which triggered the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government and saw three prime ministers take office in quick succession.
The event was also attended by Melaka State Executive Councillor for Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communications, Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan, and Information Department Director-General Julina Johan.
Fahmi outlined efforts to strengthen communication with the grassroots through the MADANI Community network. He announced that all MADANI communities nationwide would receive simplified policy briefings within 24 hours of any government announcement.
“We will explore the best methods to convey complex information in an easy-to-understand form,” he said. “The aim is for MADANI communities to quickly absorb and relay information within their local areas.”
He confirmed that one key announcement will be the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), to be unveiled by Prime Minister Anwar on July 31. “Malaysia Plans are highly technical, covering areas like hospital and school construction. Within 24 hours, MADANI communities will receive simplified summaries to ensure clear communication,” he added.
