Manchester United’s newest signing showcased plenty of promising moments alongside the club’s biggest star in a 2-1 victory over West Ham to kick off the Premier League Summer Series.
Bruno Fernandes was in top form, leading Manchester United to a narrow 2-1 win against West Ham in the Premier League Summer Series match at MetLife Stadium.
The Red Devils started the game with intensity, as Rasmus Højlund struck the post just seconds into the match. This early chance served as a warning, and five minutes later, United capitalized. During what seemed like a routine sequence, West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola fumbled the ball directly into the path of Ayden Heaven, who was fouled in the ensuing scramble, earning United a penalty. Fernandes confidently converted the spot-kick, giving his team a 1-0 lead early in the game.
For the remainder of the first half, West Ham had moments of control, but Manchester United remained disciplined, maintaining their shape. The Red Devils had the best opportunity of the half when Amad Diallo’s goal was disallowed after the winger was deemed a step or two offside before receiving a through ball.
Fernandes had another chance early in the second half but fired his shot straight at Areola. However, the Portuguese star made the goalkeeper pay for another error. After Areola played a pass directly to Kobbie Mainoo, Fernandes capitalized, curling a long-range effort into the net to double United’s advantage in the 52nd minute.
West Ham responded in the 63rd minute, pulling one back to give themselves hope as the game progressed. Shortly afterward, Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim made wholesale changes, introducing 10 substitutes, including veterans like Casemiro, Mason Mount, and Harry Maguire, alongside youngsters such as Chido Obi, Diego Leon, Jack Fletcher, and Tyler Fredricson. The pace of the game slowed thereafter, but United held firm, surviving a few late West Ham chances to secure the victory.
While the first goal came from a penalty and the second followed a goalkeeper error, Fernandes consistently orchestrated United’s attack. Whenever the Red Devils created chances, the Portuguese star was often at the heart of the action, as he has been since joining the club.
When building a squad, ensuring that key players complement each other is crucial. If Saturday’s performance is any indication, new signing Matheus Cunha fits seamlessly alongside Fernandes. The duo displayed clear chemistry, frequently linking up in central areas. Their connection was evident early on, with Cunha firing a shot on target just 18 minutes into the game after a clever dummy from Fernandes. Their immediate understanding bodes well for Amorim as he constructs his attack around the pair.
Cunha also demonstrated his work rate, pressing relentlessly to win back possession. While it wasn’t a standout performance, the key takeaway from Saturday is clear: United’s new signing can thrive alongside the team’s talisman.
Among Manchester United’s younger players introduced in the second half, 18-year-old defender Ayden Heaven was one of two teenagers in the starting XI, alongside Leny Yoro. Heaven had an eventful outing, playing a role in two of the game’s three goals.
He was somewhat fortunate with the first, capitalizing on a loose ball before being fouled to win the penalty. However, the second half brought a harsh lesson when West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen, one of the Premier League’s top wingers, exploited too much space on Heaven’s left side to score. While Bowen’s quality can trouble most defenders, Heaven’s positioning offered a learning opportunity. Overall, it was a solid showing for the young defender, who demonstrated he can compete at this level while gaining valuable experience.
Heaven, who joined United from Arsenal during the winter transfer window, made six appearances across all competitions in the second half of last season.
Manchester United will continue their preseason campaign with their next Premier League Summer Series match against Bournemouth in Chicago. They will conclude their U.S. tour against Everton in Atlanta on August 3.
