Former member of parliament Tony Pua has called on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to step in and halt a police investigation into an alleged plot to topple the government.
Pua described the probe as “ridiculous nonsense” and urged Anwar to intervene swiftly.
Echoes of Past Investigations
Pua said the current situation brought back memories of his own experience when he was investigated for “activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy”.
“I was barred from leaving the country,” he recalled.
That earlier probe was connected to the 1MDB scandal, which eventually led to the conviction and imprisonment of former prime minister Najib Razak.
“Now, the police are again investigating an alleged conspiracy to topple the government, involving a purported ‘influential individual’ and an international media agency,” Pua said.
He linked the investigation to a recent Bloomberg report that alleged ties between the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and what it called a “Corporate Mafia”.
Details of the Police Probe
Police have not disclosed specific details of the case, including the identity of the so-called influential individual or the international media agency involved.
Inspector-General of Police Mohd Khalid Ismail confirmed earlier today that the investigation centres on claims of a plot to overthrow the government and undermine national stability.
The probe is being handled under Section 124B of the Penal Code, which covers activities prejudicial to parliamentary democracy.
Conviction under this section carries a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment.
Pua remarked that the developments felt like “deja vu” and stressed that Anwar must put an end to what he called an unwarranted investigation.
