U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that the United States will impose a 35% tariff on imports from Canada starting August 1. The announcement was made in a letter addressed to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, which Trump shared on his social media platform. Trump warned that the tariff could be raised further if Canada retaliates.
In addition to targeting Canada, Trump revealed broader plans to implement blanket tariffs ranging from 15% to 20% on most other trade partners. Speaking in an interview with NBC News, he emphasized that formal notification letters were not necessary for every country.
“Not everybody needs a letter. We’re simply setting the tariffs,” Trump stated. “All remaining countries will be subject to tariffs—whether 20% or 15%—and we’ll finalize those details now.”
The announcement marks an escalation of Trump’s ongoing trade offensive, which recently included fresh tariffs on key allies such as Japan and South Korea, as well as a significant 50% tariff on copper.
