Two political analysts have advised Upko, KDM, and STAR to merge with larger coalitions to survive Sabah’s evolving political scene.
Despite strong local-focused campaigns, voters in the recent state election favoured bigger platforms like Gabungan Rakyat Sabah and the more established Warisan. Upko secured three seats, STAR two, and KDM one.
Upko Seen as Natural Fit for GRS

Lee Kuok Tiung from Universiti Malaysia Sabah said Upko would have performed far worse under the Pakatan Harapan banner. He highlighted that Upko’s “Sabah First” slogan already aligns with one of GRS’s four manifesto pillars.
STAR and KDM Also Need a Bigger Umbrella
Lee believed STAR would have won more seats had it not left GRS last month, as its exit split Kadazandusun Murut votes. For KDM, retaining just one seat leaves its future uncertain despite not being the weakest performer.
Both analysts agreed that uniting under GRS would consolidate fragmented Kadazandusun Murut support and strengthen these parties for future polls.
KDM, formed in 2022 by Peter Anthony who is currently jailed, saw acting president Priscella Peter lose the Melalap seat her father once held.
