Sacked Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin and 18 other opposition MPs aligned with him have declared their support for Perikatan Nasional following the appointment of its new chairman.
MPs congratulate new PN leader
The group of 19 MPs, including 13 who remain in Bersatu, issued a joint statement congratulating PAS vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar on his appointment as PN chairman today.
They described the appointment as a serious step towards consolidating the coalition and preparing it to serve the people and rebuild the country.
“As MPs, we will continue to support PN as PAS leads the coalition,” they stated.
The 19 MPs pledged to give Samsuri their full backing to guide the opposition coalition forward.
Supreme Council confirms leadership change
Earlier today, the PN Supreme Council unanimously agreed to appoint Samsuri as chairman, filling the vacancy left by Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin.
Muhyiddin had relinquished the position on January 1 and has now been appointed a PN deputy chairman.
The decision marks a significant leadership transition within the opposition alliance.
Hamzah Zainudin, who serves as opposition leader, and three other Bersatu MPs were sacked from the party on February 13 amid an ongoing leadership dispute with Muhyiddin.
Reports indicate that Hamzah and his supporters plan to take over another political party in the coming week.
Agreement on opposition leader role
At the same Supreme Council meeting, leaders from PN’s component parties agreed that PAS should take over the opposition leader position currently held by Hamzah.
PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan later clarified that no final decision has been made by the coalition.
He said PAS would need additional time to carefully consider and study the proposal.
