The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission sunday arrested a Terengganu executive councillor who is also an assemblyman. PAS has responded by stressing that he remains innocent until proven guilty.
Party respects investigation and rule of law
PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said the party fully respects the ongoing MACC investigation process.
He emphasised that in a nation governed by the rule of law, the fundamental principle is that a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
“We expect more of such cases to surface after this. In any case, we will remain calm and let due process take its course,” he wrote in a Facebook post.
Fadhli added that the arrested councillor does not need to step down from his executive council position.
He explained that holding the exco role would have no influence on the MACC investigation.
Details of the allegations and arrest
Earlier, Terengganu MACC director Hazrul Shazreen Abd Yazid confirmed the arrest of the assemblyman, who is in his 60s.
The councillor is alleged to have abused his position by instructing two state government-linked companies to hire his two children in 2018 and 2020.
Hazrul said the suspect will be brought to court to face charges in the near future.
Fadhli expressed puzzlement over the timing of the arrest.
He questioned why no action, such as arrests or prosecution, had taken place in the previous six years.
“In the past six years, did MACC not have any evidence? Has it only been uncovered today?” he asked.
