PAS has clarified that its decision to decline positions in the new Perlis state executive council is not meant to challenge the palace.
It is simply based on party principles and solidarity.
PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden responded to online accusations claiming the party was confronting the palace.
Continued Support for State Government
He said PAS fully supports the Perlis government.
The party also respects the role of the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, in the state’s administration.
Although PAS backs the government, it opted out of the executive council to stand in solidarity with former menteri besar Shukri Ramli.
This move also signals disagreement with the actions of eight assemblymen that prompted Shukri’s resignation.
Afnan noted that PAS’s six assemblymen attended the swearing-in of new menteri besar Abu Bakar Hamzah on December 28.
This attendance demonstrates the party’s ongoing support for the state administration.
Adherence to Constitutional Principles
He emphasised that all procedures followed the rules of a constitutional monarchy.
“Where is the confrontation with the palace? Which action disrespects the Raja of Perlis? The answer is none,” he said.
Earlier, Abu Bakar, the Perlis Bersatu chief, announced that the proposed executive council list would include only four Bersatu assemblymen, as PAS chose not to participate.
On Tuesday, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan stated that the party’s executive council members would resign their positions to support Shukri, who cited health reasons for his resignation.
Takiyuddin added that PAS would decline any posts in Abu Bakar’s new lineup.
Abu Bakar was appointed following a political crisis where eight Perikatan Nasional assemblymen reportedly submitted statutory declarations withdrawing support for Shukri.
This included three from PAS, whose party memberships were later terminated.
