Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin has defended his decision to step down as Perikatan Nasional chairman.
He described the move as a necessary step back to strengthen the party’s foundations.
In a New Year message to members, the former prime minister affirmed he remains fully in control of Bersatu.
Strengthening the Party
He explained that stepping aside allows for reorganising leadership and building a more structured and sustainable party.
The priority now is ensuring the party’s continuity, resilience, and future, he added.
Muhyiddin resigned as PN chairman effective January 1, following the Perlis political crisis.
Impact on Coalition Leadership
His resignation prompted other Bersatu leaders to step down from coalition posts.
He called on members to unite and enhance cooperation.
Despite no longer leading PN, he pledged to remain a loyal partner.
Preserving Coalition Stability
This partnership will continue to maintain the coalition’s stability, he said.
Muhyiddin urged members to stay steadfast and disciplined.
They should foster mutual respect and handle differences maturely and privately.
Public disagreements would harm Bersatu’s long-term interests, he warned.
Before his resignation, the party faced internal conflicts.
These included an attempt to remove him as president during party polls.
Recent Party Actions
Bersatu sacked Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan.
It also suspended Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal.
Several division chiefs were expelled.
